International Online Blackmail

What to do if someone is blackmailing you from another country.

Start with what you can control: preserve the threats and account details, secure your accounts, avoid giving the offender new sensitive information, report the account on the platform involved, and use the police or cybercrime reporting channels available where you live. An offender appearing to be overseas does not mean you have no options.

SafeLine support is available 24/7. Phone, text or email our support team.

First steps if the blackmailer appears to be overseas

Save the threatening messages, usernames, profile links, phone numbers, email addresses, dates, payment demands, cryptocurrency wallet addresses, transaction records, and any messages showing who the offender threatens to contact. Keep enough context to show what happened.

Then secure the email and social accounts the offender knows about. Replace reused passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, review logged-in devices, and reduce unnecessary public visibility of friends, followers, family members, and workplace information.

Can I report a blackmailer who is in another country?

Yes. You can still report online blackmail where you live even if the person appears to be in another country. Contact the law-enforcement or cybercrime reporting channel appropriate to your location and provide the evidence you preserved. Explain why you believe an overseas person or account may be involved.

If you are in the United States, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is one official channel for reporting internet-enabled crime. People outside the United States should use the appropriate local police or national cybercrime reporting service for their country.

Do not assume the claimed country is accurate

A foreign phone number, profile location, language, payment account, or statement from the offender does not by itself prove where the person is physically located. Online offenders can disguise or misrepresent their location.

Preserve the identifiers exactly as they appear instead of trying to identify or confront the person yourself.

Report the account on the platform involved

Use the platform's official reporting tools for blackmail, harassment, impersonation, or threats involving intimate material. When it is safe to do so, preserve the evidence you may need before blocking or reporting the account.

If the threat involves social media, also review who can see your friends, followers, tags, employer, phone number, email address, and other personal information.

If the blackmailer threatens to leak photos or videos

Do not send additional intimate material, passwords, recovery codes, identity documents, or new personal information because of a deadline or threat. If the content is eligible for an image-hashing protection service, review the relevant official resource and understand its coverage limits.

SafeLine's threatened photo leak guide and StopNCII and private messages guide explain additional steps for intimate-image threats.

If the blackmailer demands money or cryptocurrency

Payment does not guarantee that the threats will stop or that material will be deleted. Preserve the amount demanded, payment handle, wallet address, QR code, receipts, and transaction IDs. If you already paid, keep those records rather than deleting them.

See the already paid a blackmailer guide and cryptocurrency blackmail guide for related steps.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if someone is blackmailing me from another country?

Preserve the threats and account identifiers, secure the accounts the offender knows about, avoid giving them new sensitive material or credentials, report the platform account, and use the law-enforcement or cybercrime reporting channel available where you live.

Can I report a blackmailer who is overseas?

Yes. Report the incident where you live and provide the evidence you preserved. The appropriate investigative response depends on your location and the circumstances, but an overseas claim does not prevent you from making a report.

Should I pay an overseas blackmailer?

Payment does not guarantee that threats will stop or that content will be deleted. Preserve the demand and payment information, and avoid making rushed decisions solely because the offender sets a deadline.

How do I know whether the blackmailer is really in another country?

You usually cannot know from a profile location, phone number, or claim alone. Preserve technical, account, and payment identifiers instead of assuming the stated country is accurate.
