StopNCII works through participating platforms
StopNCII creates a digital fingerprint, or hash, of an intimate image or video on your device. Participating platforms can use that hash to look for matching content and act when it violates their policies.
The image or video itself is not uploaded to StopNCII as part of the hashing process.
Encrypted private messaging is different
StopNCII's official FAQ states that encrypted services are not covered and explains that the tool works on public-facing platform content rather than encrypted messaging.
This means a StopNCII case should not be treated as a guarantee that an image cannot be sent in a private or encrypted message.
Report the private-message account directly
If threats or sharing happen through direct messages, preserve the messages and account identifiers, then use that service's reporting and blocking tools when appropriate.
For participating public-facing surfaces, StopNCII may still provide additional protection against matching uploads.
StopNCII does not remove content from the entire internet
StopNCII says its protection applies only through participating platforms. Other sites, services and private messaging systems may require separate reporting.
For content created when the person depicted was under 18, use the appropriate child-safety resource such as NCMEC's Take It Down rather than StopNCII.
